Autoimmune conditions; such as vitiligo causes hypo pigmentation.Psoriasis is also thought to be an autoimmune condition; symptoms of which are red and crusty patches of skin covered with silver scales. Also Lichen planus which causes swelling and irritation in the skin, hair, nails and mucus membranes.
Other common conditions:
Infections of the skin which could be; viral, bacterial or fungal.
Inflammatory conditions; such as eczema and dermatitis.
Acne Vulgaris; caused by increased levels of the male sex hormone after puberty. The Sebaceous glands become blocked and infected, leading to inflammation and pustule formation. Common sites are the face, chest, and upper back.
Pressure ulcers which may lead to infections and septicaemia. Can be caused by immobility and poor nutritional status.
Skin Cancers; as a result of overexposure to ultraviolet light from the sun.
