                                                                                                    Peptic ulcers
Affects the mucosa lining of the stomach or duodenum. Common symptoms are; epigastric pain, and gnawing or burning sensation, which occurs 2 to 3 hours after meals. There may also be experienced; nausea, vomiting, and heartburn. Complications can arise due to excessive bleeding, the stomach lining being perforated, or of a blockage developing. The may cause is an infection by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria, which can irritate the stomach or upper intestine lining, causing an ulcer to form. Low gastric output may predispose an individual to the infection. The action of NASIDs medication can also affect the intestinal mucosa resulting in ulcer formation. Treatment  will depend upon the cause. The usual cause being H. pylori which is combated through administering; an antibiotic to kill the bacteria, and drugs that reduce acid production, to prevent further damage to the mucosal lining. lifestyle changes are also recommended, for example stress reduction. Other factors which can exasperate the condition are; smoking which also can reduce the gastric mucosa and food allergies.
