Looking at the body as an Homeodynamic system one is able to investigate imbalances that may lead to ill health. For example an impairment in detoxification may arise from problems related to poor absorption of the essential nutrients in the diet which are required for the detoxification process. However the poor absorption may stem from a chronic inflammatory condition as result of an imbalance within the immune system, which in itself may be due to low levels of probiotics.
Investigating Imbalances which has led to ill health helps to identify what is particular about the individual who is susceptible. That is; their lifestyle, any underlying medical conditions, nutritional status, etc. The idea that one treatment fits all approach is not always appropriate.
Traditional Chinese Medicine emphasises that the same cause may manifest itself as different conditions, that its impact will vary dependent upon any significant underlying factors. It is important to investigate imbalances which appear to be driving the symptoms observed. Any treatment protocol would therefore need to address such imbalances.
Imbalances can lead to a variety of conditions. There are certain fundamental imbalances that have been identified as significant. It is also important to be constantly mindful of the interplay of these systems when thinking of one’s diet and particularly when considering supplements. A deficiency of a nutrient may not just reflect its lack within the diet, but possibly an inability of the body to absorb it, or there is a greater demand for that nutrient as in periods of growth, stress, or due to particular individual needs.
The following sections looks at major imbalances which have been identified and can be supported through nutrition.
