X-linked recessive disorder resulting in the absence of dystrophin synthesis. Affects males with onset by age 5. Symptoms; weakness in proximal muscles of extremities (usually pelvis). Progression of condition leads to immobilisation. Treatment: there is no cure; respiratory failure leads to death.
An inherited disorder that begins in adulthood, and results in the progressive wasting away of muscle. Symptoms include; prolonged muscle contractions (myotonia), slurred speech, cataracts, cardiac conduction defects, testicular atrophy and baldness. Treatment to alleviate myotonia.
